How Livescribe Pulse changed my career

It is orthodoxy among Business Analysts that, when you're interviewing, you need to take fantastically detailed notes. Here's why.

Taking a great set of notes is the only economic means of recalling important details. Audio recording isn't practical because it is too inefficient listening to the audio after the interview—you're multiplying your time commitment to that interview by a factor of something greater than 2. So professional notetaking requires the interviewer to pick out the important details and ensure they're written down during the interview.

Many interviewees know a lot of detail.

The typical interaction goes like this:

Manager is in full flight describing some detail that he, high performing type A personality, knows like the back of his hand resulting in him talking a hundred-miles an hour (even in countries like Australia that measure their speeds in kilometres). Then he notices. Me. Scribbling furiously. He pauses. I finish. He's lost his train of thought. Or he offers me less detail (I want the detail!). Or we cover less ground…

No longer.

Now, the interaction goes like this:

Manager is in full flight describing some detail that she, high performing type A personality, knows like the back of her hand resulting in her talking a hundred-miles an hour (even in countries like Australia that measure their speeds in kilometres). Me: comfortably jotting key topic titles. Maintaining eye contact. Putting in empty list placeholders, like this:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Making encouraging head jestures to keep the manager talking. Writing half sentences of key phrases with markers like this [

Why the change?

The key element that changes when taking notes with a Livescribe Pulse is that the audio is aligned with the digital ink. Whenever you click on a word you've written, the Pulse plays back the audio that was being said the moment you were writing it. It's powerful.

It amazes everyone I demonstrate it to: including the Tablet PC user who immediately purchased a Pulse, retiring his less-useful Tablet PC.

With the Livescribe Pulse, the Business Analyst has an economically efficient means of recalling key detail from audio.

Most frequently, the note detail doesn't need to be recalled. The overarching ideas and the commitments entered into represent the meat of the meeting. But when the key points do need recall—at any time in the future—I can simply click on my placeholder text to hear the Manager speak to me again, exactly the same words she said before. I fill in each of the points she made. Turn to Tinderbox. Begin shaping my synthesis.

I agree, I noticed as I stay at home and do these online home based jobs, there are several job posts for a transcriptionist. And that is the very thing that you mentioned, it takes a little much of your time to listen to audios than putting the details on the notes and just reviewing them whenever there is a need to. :-)

I think that taking notes it's like a guide to decide who stays with the spot 'cause help you to remember how was the interviewee. I was hired to do a study of employee performance at xlpharmacy and the results were surprising.
