Introduction

In following posts, I will illustrate the practise of textual analysis through examining one particular instance of textual analysis, in order to demonstrate three things:

1. The practise of textual analysis.
2. The limitations and challenges of performing textual analysis using existing tools.
3. The detail surrounding the facilities I outlined in my initial precis on this subject.

Since I wrote my initial precis, Mark Bernstein alerted me to analogous work in this area by Neal Audenaert. While my initial thinking was conceived independently of Audenaert's work, I will refer to his work as it provides an interesting point of comparison. Audenaert's purpose is representing "visually complex documents," by "decomposing document objects into component parts, identifying overlapping and interrelated information layers, and expressing relationships within and between documents"; whereas my motive is to provide tools for generation of new meaning through analysis of extant documents. Audenaert and I have both independently arrived at the conclusion that the "unique requirements of this domain," "require that we reexamine the affordances traditionally provided spatial hypermedia systems."
